Jan served 30 years with the Phoenix Police Department. She served five of those years in patrol before transferring to the Special Assignments Unit (SAU, the department's full time SWAT team. Jan joined SAU as part of a sniper/observer team and two years later she moved to an entry team position as a rear guard. Ultimately Jan was selected as a primary negotiator and served in that capacity for 25 years.
Jan has attended several hundred hours of crisis/hostage negotiation-related training. Jan has been involved in more than 400 hostage/barricade incidents, including her role as a primary negotiator in the 2-week Lewis Prison Standoff in Arizona. As part of the negotiation team she served as the negotiation team coordinator and for five years served as the SWAT Unit's full-time training officer. As the training officer Jan was responsible for all unit-level training to include crisis/hostage negotiation, firearms, precision rifle, SCBA and WMD.
As a result of her vast knowledge and experience, Jan was selected to serve as the Crisis Negotiation Section Chairperson for the National Tactical Officer's Association (NTOA) and an (NTOA) instructor for 18 years. Jan also trains basic and advanced classes in Crisis Negotiation for various local, state and national police departments including first responders, dispatchers and crisis negotiators. Jan is a nationally recognized expert in the field of crisis/hostage negotiation and has presented training and case studies to thousands of negotiators. Jan also serves as a head judge in crisis negotiation competitions around the United States. Jan also served as a long-time delegate to the National Council of Negotiation Associations.
Jan is an Arizona Post Certified general and firearms instructor. She has attended the FBI two-week negotiation school at Quantico and has a teaching certificate from the State of Arizona. Jan is an adjunct instructor for Glendale Community College in Glendale, Arizona. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University and obtained her Master's Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. |
